Documentation

What is a region?

The practice of anatomy is ambiguous about this term as already mentioned by TA98: "Regiones: The use of this term differs in practice. It may be restricted to areas of the surface of the body or be three dimensional." The problem is that such a situation is not acceptable in a modern terminology.

Our approach is to consider a regio as a surface of the body, in other words as an immaterial entity. This is particularly important in the chapter on general anatomy. This chapter is splitted into two parts: the cardinal parts of the human body, all material entities and the regions, all immaterial entities.

This position implies several changes compared to TA98 and other later terminologies. Even the FMA is not totally clear to this respect: it sometimes uses the term region for material entities! Our position is to avoid the word region for any material entity.
